Let’s start off by explaining what a responsive website is and then we can dive into why it’s a necessity. Now this doesn’t mean it just shrinks down to size, but it adapts to the different screen size, so your website is still user friendly and can be easily navigated. Now why is it a necessity you ask? Well check out these numbers; From Feb 2018-Feb 2019, Worldwide Device usage saw Desktop at 48.21% Mobile 47.96% and Tablet only 3.83%. This means over half of all internet users are using portable devices over desktops, so why would you be building a webpage just for Desktop view? You’re disadvantaging yourself from all these eyes and potential clients! Crazy right? More and more people are using smart phones and tablets to browse the internet and it’s not slowing down either, you’d be pretty silly not to optimise your webpage for mobile view, but let’s take things up a notch.

Google thinks responsive websites are pretty cool. If someone is searching for let’s say “parrot swings” (your specialty) on their mobile device, but your website isn’t mobile responsive, Google won’t be putting your website high up in those results. You all know the best place to hide a dead body is the second page of search results, right? You’re already losing customers! Over 50% of internet users won’t be able to find or view your page because it’s not mobile responsive.

Let’s say you’re getting all this awesome organic traffic but your bounce rate is high, not good right? What’s worse is Google are not going to like this bounce rate and you’re going to start slipping down the search results. Even if your website is sitting pretty in search results, if it looks and performs poorly on tablet or smartphone, bounce rate will be a big problem. If users can’t navigate your website and find what they came for they’re going to leave and someone else will get that business. Google recognizes ‘time on page’ as a fundamental indicator of a site’s value for any given query. Responsive web design makes your website much easier for visitors to read and navigate. The result is an improved user experience and typically a greater time on site. Basically, if you’re not having a good time you won’t stick around, and you won’t be returning.
